A vacation in Rome is a dream for many tourists worldwide, and the Eternal City is wonderful whenever you decide to visit it. If you’re dreaming of Rome, its ancient ruins, cobblestone alleys, museums, and parks are waiting for you. You’re not alone.
But one question every traveler faces before booking that flight is: What’s the best time to visit Rome?
The truth is Rome is captivating year-round; there isn’t one “best” season to explore the Eternal City. Often it depends on your travel style and tolerance for heat or crowds, since some seasons shine brighter than others. Whether you’re planning your first Roman holiday or a return trip, here you’ll find an ultimate travel guide on what to expect in Rome in each season, so you can decide when you think the best time to go is. Let’s find out together!
Best time to visit Rome, Spring (March to May): a blooming beauty
If you ask locals or seasoned travelers, many will say that spring is the best season in Rome. The weather is just right—not too hot, not too cold—and the city starts to shake off its winter coat. The Eternal City has bloomed, and the parks and gardens are painted with all the colors of flowers.
Outdoor activities are back, and it’s possible to dine outside. Crowds are still manageable, even though Rome is one of the most famous sites for Italian school trips, and events related to Holy Easter attract many believers and travelers every year. If you decide to visit Rome during these months, our tip for this season is to pack layers. Spring weather is mostly mild, but evenings can get chilly and it might rain.
Summer in Rome (June to August): hot and busy
Rome in summer is a mix of magic and mayhem. If you love long days, buzzing piazzas, and open-air events, summer might be the best season in Rome for you.
But just be prepared: the city in this season gets hot and very crowded. There are tour groups everywhere; that’s why we suggest booking guided tours and tickets in advance.
In summer, the Eternal City is full of movie night arenas, outdoor festivals, and live concerts. In addition, it is that time of the year to discover the coast close to Rome. If you decide to discover Rome during these months, our tip for this season is to wake up early to beat the heat and crowds and embrace the Roman way and take a long afternoon break.
Autumn in Rome (September to November): culture, color, and cozy
Looking for fewer tourists, cooler temperatures, and amazing food? Then autumn might just be the best season in Rome. September still feels like summer, but by October, the leaves start turning into the colors of fall, and the city slows down in the best way.
There are shorter lines at museums and monuments, sometimes even at the Colosseum and Vatican Museums. This is also a fantastic season for foodies, with seasonal delights like figs, porcini mushrooms, and truffles gracing menus, as well as the start of the grape harvest season. If you decide to explore Rome during these months, our tip for this season is to not miss the chance to do day trips to the Castelli Romani, which are perfect in the fall, and it is possible to join some food and wine festivals organized every year in this season.
Another reason to love autumn in Rome is the Ottobrata Romana — the warm, sunny days of October when locals enjoy outdoor strolls, lunches, and trips to the countryside. It’s the perfect time to experience the city at a slower, more authentic pace. It’s the sweet spot between summer heat and winter chill — a time when Rome feels slower, warmer, and more authentic than ever.
Winter in Rome (December to February): quiet charm and holiday magic season
Winter is Rome’s low season, but don’t overlook it. Fewer tourists, festive markets, and lower prices make this a sweet spot—especially if you’re traveling on a budget (except at Christmas time) or love holiday vibes. During the most magical moment of the year, Rome is dressed up for the party with Christmas lights, nativity scenes, and decorations everywhere.
January and February are generally the quietest months, but some outdoor attractions or activities might have shorter hours or be less appealing in colder, wetter weather. This allows for a more intimate experience of Rome’s historical treasures. If you decide to visit Rome during these months, our tip for this season is to focus on indoor museums, galleries, art exhibitions, and cozy trattorias.
No matter when you decide to live your Roman Holidays, the Eternal City promises an unforgettable journey through history, art, and exquisite Italian culture in every season.
