Rome conjures images of sun-drenched piazzas, ancient ruins under clear blue skies, and gelato enjoyed al fresco, but what to do in Rome when it rains and a typical Roman downpour decides to grace your long-awaited vacation? Fear not because of the Eternal City has more than enough charm indoors to keep you enchanted even when the skies turn gray.
A rainy day in Rome is not a day lost: it’s an opportunity to discover a different, often more intimate, side of the Eternal City. Rome’s charm doesn’t wash away with the rain—in fact, it only deepens. With so many indoor treasures to discover, rainy days can become some of your most memorable Roman moments.
So grab an umbrella, wear your comfiest shoes and explore the Eternal City like a local—even when the weather is less than perfect.
1. Rome when it rains, visits indoor treasures
Rome is full of grand palaces where noble families once competed to show off their power and prestige — and on a rainy day, these historic residences are the perfect escape. Step inside elegant halls, secret courtyards, and private art collections that reveal a quieter, more refined side of the city.
Start with Palazzo Barberini, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture that houses works by Caravaggio, Bernini, and Raphael. The building itself is an artwork, with sweeping staircases and frescoed ceilings that capture the splendor of 17th-century Rome. Just a short walk away, Palazzo Spada hides one of the city’s most surprising treasures — Borromini’s famous perspective illusion, where a corridor that looks endless is, in fact, just a few meters long.
Then, don’t miss Galleria Sciarra, a hidden courtyard near the Trevi Fountain, where every inch of wall is covered with stunning Art Nouveau frescoes. It’s open to the public during working hours and offers a magical break from the rain.
2. Explore archaeological Rome’s underground
While the Colosseum might be less appealing in a drizzle, there are several archaeological sites located Rome’s underground which can be easily visited during a rainy day.
Embark on an underground tour to discover ancient Roman houses, crypts, and catacombs: sites like the Catacombs of Priscilla, the Basilica of San Clemente, or the Domus Aurea (Nero’s Golden House) offer a fascinating glimpse into the city’s layered past and are perfectly immune to the weather above.
3. Discover culinary Roman delights
What better way to escape the rain than by diving into Rome’s renowned food scene? Sign up for a traditional Roman cooking class and learn to make pasta, pizza, or tiramisù from scratch.
Alternatively, explore an indoor food market like the Mercato Centrale near Termini Station. It’s a vibrant hub where you can sample local delicacies, grab a gourmet lunch, and soak in the lively atmosphere without getting wet.
4. Shopping therapy under cover
Rainy weather provides the perfect excuse for some serious retail therapy, and Rome offers some splendid indoor options. Head to the elegant Galleria Alberto Sordi, a stunning Art Nouveau shopping arcade on Via del Corso (we’ve shown it here). Here, you can browse international brands and Italian fashion in a sophisticated, covered setting.
For a more fashion-forward and bustling experience, explore Rome’s various department stores like La Rinascente and Coin, which offer everything from the most famous Italian and international fashion brands. La Rinascente on Via del Tritone also hides a surprising archaeological area, making your shopping trip a unique mix of style and history.
5. Relax at a Thermal Spa
When it rains in Rome, follow in the footsteps of ancient Romans, who famously used their elaborate public baths for both hygiene and socialization, by dedicating your rainy day to a luxury indoor spa. Several high-end hotels and dedicated wellness centers in and near Rome, like the renowned QC Termeroma or the luxurious Six Senses Spa, offer extensive “wellness paths.”
These are multi-hour circuits typically including hydro-massage pools, saunas, Turkish baths (Hammam), emotional showers, and relaxation rooms. It’s the ultimate escape: melt away your travel stresses with a hot stone massage or a mineral-rich thermal soak while the rain patters harmlessly outside.
