Piazza Navona: Rome’s most iconic Christmas market
No Roman Christmas is complete without a visit to the Piazza Navona Christmas Market, known locally as the Fiera della Befana. Set against the magnificent backdrop of Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers, this is the city’s most beloved holiday hub. Forget the rustic wooden huts of Northern Europe. Piazza Navona’s market is a vibrant, family-friendly spectacle running from early December until January 6th (Epiphany, or La Befana).
Stroll through stalls brimming with artisan crafts, colorful decorations, and traditional Italian sweets like torrone. A historic carousel spins at the heart of the market, and the square is filled with street performers and stalls selling toys and costumes for the Epiphany witch, La Befana, who delivers gifts on January 6th.
The Immacolate Conception in Piazza di Spagna
The Roman Christmas season officially kicks off on December 8th with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This is a major public holiday and a moment of deep devotion, centered at the column of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza Mignanelli, near the Spanish Steps.
The highlight is the traditional ceremony where the Pope pays a solemn homage to the Virgin Mary, offering a floral wreath at the base of the column. This deeply moving public event draws massive crowds and marks a spectacular start to the Roman holidays.
Witness the splendor of the Vatican Christmas tree
Just across the Tiber, Vatican City becomes the spiritual heart of the season, offering two unmissable sights. In fact, every year, St. Peter’s Square is adorned with a towering Christmas tree and a magnificent, life-sized Nativity Scene (Presepe).
The massive tree, typically donated by a European region, is illuminated in early December, and its grandeur is breathtaking when set against the iconic Basilica. The accompanying Presepe is often a masterpiece of artistry, featuring characters and scenery from different regions of the world.
In addition, visitors can explore the “100 Presepi” exhibition, showcasing a diverse collection of nativity scenes from across Italy and beyond.
The Blessing of the Bambinelli
For a deeply moving local tradition, try to visit Vatican on the third Sunday of Advent or as known as by local as “Bambinelli Sunday”.
During the weekly Angelus address, children (and adults!) fill Saint Peter square, holding up the little baby Jesus figurines (Bambinelli) from their family Nativity scenes. The Pope then gives a special blessing to the figurines, which are then taken home and placed in the presepe on Christmas Eve.
Christmas World: Global Festivity in Villa Borghese (H3)
For a truly immersive, internationally inspired experience, head to the beautiful Villa Borghese Park for the Christmas World event. This expansive festive village is a relatively new addition to Rome’s holiday lineup but has quickly become a must-see.

Look forward to massive light installations, ice skating rinks, Santa’s Grotto, and engaging live performances that showcase Christmas traditions from around the globe.
