Rome’s urban fortress: Castel Sant’Angelo

No castle journey in Rome is complete without starting right in the heart of the city. Castel Sant’Angelo is a must-see for history buffs and architecture lovers. Originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a grand mausoleum for himself and his family in the 2nd century AD, this towering cylindrical structure underwent a dramatic transformation. Over the centuries, it became a fortress, a papal residence, and even a prison, a history as layered as its stone walls. Legend says its name comes from a vision of Archangel Michael atop the castle, sheathing his sword as a sign of the end of the 590 plague.

Nowadays, it houses the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo, where you can explore Renaissance frescoes, ancient Roman remnants, and walk the famous Passetto di Borgo—a fortified, elevated corridor connecting the castle to the Vatican, famously used by popes as an escape route in times of danger. Don’t miss the breathtaking view of the Tiber River and St. Peter’s Basilica from the roof terrace!

5 Castles in and Around Rome You Can’t Miss: Castello Orsini-Odescalchi in Bracciano, a fairy tale setting

Venturing outside the city limits reveals spectacular castles set against lakes and rolling hills, telling the stories of powerful noble families. The Orsini-Odescalchi family built, in the 15th century, the Castello Orsini-Odescalchi (often called Bracciano Castle) on the shores of the serene Lake Bracciano, creating one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance fortresses in the region.

This castle is not just a museum; it’s an active piece of history, often used for high-profile weddings (like that of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes!). Visitors can wander through richly decorated rooms, see the ancient kitchens, and admire impressive armories. The panoramic view of the deep blue lake from its ramparts alone is worth the trip.

Castello Caetani in Sermoneta: the medieval stronghold

Perched dramatically on a rocky spur overlooking the Pontine Plain, the imposing Castello Caetani dominates the medieval town of Sermoneta (Latina province). Dating back to the 13th century, its origins are rooted in the Annibaldi family, but its power and form were largely shaped by the Caetani family.

This classic stronghold, with its mighty keep and defensive towers, offers a stark contrast to the Renaissance luxury of other castles. A guided visit takes you through the military quarters, the ancient kitchens, and the chilling prisons, truly immersing you in the Middle Ages.

Castello Ruspoli in Vignanello and its renaissance gardens

Just north of Rome, in the Viterbo area, you’ll find the stunning Castello Ruspoli in Vignanello— one of the highlights among the 5 Castles in and Around Rome You Can’t Miss. While the structure itself is a powerful fortress, the real star here is the magnificent Italian Renaissance garden.

One of Italy’s best-preserved examples of a formal garden, it features geometrically perfect hedges, fountains, and pathways, creating a serene and beautiful landscape designed for the pleasure of the Ruspoli family, who still own and inhabit the castle today. It’s a perfect stop for those who appreciate horticultural artistry alongside historical architecture.

Castello del Gallo in Mandela with poetic views

Located east of Rome in Mandela, the Castello del Gallo offers a quieter, more intimate historical experience. With roots stretching back to Roman and medieval times, this castle was later transformed into an elegant noble residence. It is famously linked to the poet Horace, as it overlooks the land gifted to him by Maecenas.

Still inhabited by the Del Gallo family, visiting the castle feels like stepping into a private world of history and culture, complete with antique furnishings, stunning interiors, and beautiful gardens offering breathtaking views over the surrounding hills and the Aniene River valley, an incredible stunning visit just one hour trip from the Eternal City.
