Let’s find out together the best districts to stay in Rome, considering atmosphere, comfort, and convenience.

Best neighborhoods to stay in Rome: Centro Storico

There’s no doubt that the historical city center – Centro Storico – is the top choice for accommodation during a vacation in Rome. It’s Rome’s postcard-perfect core, where every cobblestone whispers a legend and centuries-old churches stand shoulder to shoulder with elegant boutiques. As a tourist, you can stroll to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and more in just a five-minute walk. Expect history, charm, and that magical Roman vibe right outside your hotel window.
On the other hand, accommodation in the city center is surely higher in price and can often be located in the most crowded areas with many groups of tourists day and night.

Trastevere: For Romantic Souls and Nightlife Lovers

One of Rome’s most famous districts abroad, Trastevere embodies the Roman vibe at its best, representing the essence of what to expect during a vacation in Rome. Situated on the right bank of the Tiber River, Trastevere is a tangle of ivy-draped alleys, crumbling orange facades, and buzzing piazzas. This district feels like a film set, especially at night, when locals and travelers alike fill the streets with chatter, live music, and the clink of wine glasses. It’s the perfect place for a romantic and bohemian vacation in Rome.
However, the fact that it has limited public transport options and some areas can be noisy at night means that Trastevere is a good option for a vacation but may not be suitable for every kind of traveler.

Monti: For Hipsters and Culture Seekers

Nestled between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, Monti is the city’s best-kept “cool-kid” secret. Located close to the Termini main station and the archaeological sites of Ancient Rome, Monti is a district full of vintage shops, artisan coffee, and cozy wine bars which stand side by side with crumbling aqueducts and majestic basilicas.
It’s the kind of area where locals hang out during the weekend, and history breathes through the walls. The district has high demand all year round due to being in the heart of the former Ancient Rome, so you must book early if you want to find accommodation here.

Prati: For Families and Travelers Who Want to Stay Close to the Vatican

Prati is one of Rome’s most elegant districts, located on the right bank of the Tiber River, just north of the Vatican. It’s a wide, charming, and well-refined area to stay during a vacation in Rome. The area is also known by locals as a high-level working zone with law firms and diplomatic residences, and also a shopping district thanks to the boutiques of Via Cola di Rienzo.
Prati is a peaceful district and a good option for families since it is well-connected with public transport but calm during the night. It is an ideal option for travelers who prefer quiet evenings and quick access to Vatican City.

Termini: For Budget Travelers and Convenient Transit Access

Termini might not be the most beautiful place to stay during a vacation in Rome, but if you are traveling on a budget or need to catch early train or airplane connections, it’s a good and well-connected option. The streets around Termini are full of many affordable accommodations and all types of ethnic cuisines, offering easy and rapid connection with the rest of the city thanks to the subway stations and bus terminals.
Our suggestion is to find a place with a good rating and to search in the streets on the way to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore or the University La Sapienza. Don’t worry if this area isn’t the “coolest”; wherever district you choose for your vacation in Rome, the beautiful, incredible vibes of the Eternal City will find you.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay along Metro Lines: For Smart Budget Travelers Who Want to Live Like Locals

If you’re planning your vacation in Rome on a budget, one of the smartest moves is to look for accommodation near the Metro Line A, B or C, ideally no more than 20 minutes from the city center. Rome’s metro system might not be extensive, but it’s fast, reliable, and a great way to reach iconic sights without spending too much time or money.

Districts like San Giovanni (Line A), with its authentic Roman vibe and fewer tourists, or Pigneto, a trendy and artsy neighborhood near Line C and connected by bus and tram to Line A, offer a genuine local feel at more affordable prices.

Along Line B, Piramide/Ostiense, a cool, up-and-coming district full of industrial-chic flair and vibrant street art, or Bologna a true university district—home to lively students, cafes, and affordable trattorias with a hidden gem like Villa Torlonia.

These are also excellent options, making them great for travelers who want to experience Rome like a local without overspending. Choosing accommodation in these neighborhoods means you can enjoy a quieter stay while still being just a short metro ride away from the main attractions.
