There is nothing quite like watching the sun dip below the horizon as it paints the Roman skyline in shades of amber and red. Because Rome was famously built on seven hills, the city is a goldmine for breathtaking vistas. Whether you are a photographer looking for the perfect shot or a romantic soul wanting to take in the historic rooftops, tracking down the best viewpoints is an essential part of any Roman holidays itinerary.
To help you plan, this is the ultimate guide of best panoramic views in Rome, split between budget-friendly free terraces and premium, bucket-list paid experiences.
The best free panoramic views in Rome
You don’t need to spend a single Euro to enjoy some of the most iconic landscapes the Eternal City has to offer. Pack your camera and head to these incredible free terraces.
1. Il Pincio terrace
Perched directly above Piazza del Popolo, the Pincio terrace offers one of the most classic views of Rome. Look straight ahead to admire the symmetry of the piazza below, and let your eyes wander across the skyline toward the majestic dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. It is arguably the most popular spot in the city for sunset.
2. The Orange garden
Located on the Aventine Hill, the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden) is a serene, scent-filled haven framed by bitter orange trees. The terrace at the end of the park offers a perfectly framed, romantic view of the Tiber River and St. Peter’s Dome. Just a few steps away, you’ll find the famous Aventine Keyhole for a unique, framed look at the Vatican (a quiet place, we talk about it here).
3. Gianicolo Hill
While technically not one of the official seven hills, the Gianicolo hill offers perhaps the most expansive panorama of Rome. Because it sits slightly outside the bustling center, you get a sweeping, unobstructed look at the entire historic landscape—from the Spanish Steps all the way to the Colosseum.
4. Capitoline Hill
For a view that feels like stepping back in Ancient Rome, walk up to the Campidoglio – the Capitoline hill – If you head just behind the Palazzo Senatorio, you will find a quiet terrace overlooking the Roman Forum. Illuminated at night, this view of ancient ruins against the dark sky is pure magic (watch our reel!)
5. Belvedere Cederna
For an up-close, eye-level view of imperial history, head to the Belvedere Antonio Cederna. Tucked away along the Via dei Fori Imperiali, this hidden gem of a terrace puts you right in front of the monumental Trajan’s Forum and Trajan’s Column. It’s significantly less crowded than other viewpoints, making it the perfect, peaceful spot to capture the intricate layers of Rome’s ancient architecture without a wall of selfie sticks in your way (it recently reopened and we were there)
Paid viewpoints which worth every cent
If you are willing to buy a ticket, these managed historic sites take you even higher, offering unparalleled, close-up perspectives of Rome’s architectural wonders.
1. The Vittoriano
Locals call the Vittoriano the typewriter but the massive white marble monument in Piazza Venezia holds a secret: the Terrazza delle Quadrighe. Accessible via a glass elevator, this ticketed rooftop places you right in the geographic center of Rome, offering a dizzying 360 grades view of the Colosseum and the Forum (we talked about it here).
2. Castel Sant’Angelo
Originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, Castel Sant’Angelo features a magnificent upper terrace right below the statue of the archangel. From here, you get a stunning, front-row seat to the Tiber River, its historic bridges, and the nearby Vatican City.
3. Palatine Hill
An entry ticket to the Colosseum ecosystem includes access to the Palatine Hill. Climbing up to the Farnese Gardens terrace rewards you with an overlooking view of the Roman Forum from the exact spot where emperors used to live. It provides a historical context that ground-level walking simply cannot match.
Traveler tips for Roman terraces
- Golden hour is real: aim to arrive at these viewpoints about 30 minutes before sunset to catch the best lighting, the famous golden hour.
- Comfy shoes are non-negotiable: Rome’s hills are steep and paved with cobblestones, our suggestion is to skip the heels for the climbs.
