Rome isn’t just an open-air museum in 2026, it is the beating heart of the international sporting world. While the Colosseum stands as a testament to the contests of the past, the Stadio Olimpico, Foro Italico and the historic streets of Rome city center are ready to host the legends of today.
If you’re a fan of high-octane atmosphere, world-class athleticism, and the unparalleled charm of the Italian lifestyle, here is why 2026 is your year to visit the Eternal City.
The Rome Marathon
For those who prefer to be part of the action, Rome offers the most scenic race tracks on the planet. Forget generic city circuits; here, every kilometer is a lesson in art history. The Run Rome Marathon this year is scheduled on March 22. This marathon is the crown jewel, starting and finishing at the foot of the Colosseum, passing the Vatican, and sprinting through the cobblestones of the Imperial Forums. It is 42.195 km of pure adrenaline and ancient wonder. Runners can enjoy a mix of challenging hills and flat stretches, with iconic landmarks providing the ultimate backdrop for both first-timers and seasoned marathoners.
The Wizz Air Rome Half Marathon
The Wizz Air Rome Half Marathon is scheduled on October 18, 2026, and is perfect for those who want a shorter but equally scenic race. The 21.097 km route starts at the Circus Maximus and winds through Rome’s historic center, including the Colosseum, Piazza Venezia, and the charming streets near the Vatican. This autumn race combines the golden seasonal light with the energy of thousands of runners, making it ideal for both competitive athletes and casual runners seeking a memorable experience.
The Six Nations rugby championship
The year kicks off with the thunderous roar of the Guinness Six Nations. In 2026, Rome’s Stadio Olimpico becomes a fortress for the Italian “Azzurri.” After the match hosted on February, 7 between Italy vs Scotland, Rome is ready for the next weekend of rugby with the match between Italy and England scheduled on March, 7 at the Olimpic Stadium.
There is nothing quite like a rugby weekend in Rome. The Third Time tradition sees fans from across Europe sharing beers and pasta in the sunny squares of the Flaminio district. It’s a masterclass in sportsmanship and a must-see for anyone who loves the physical drama of elite rugby.
Internazionali BNL d’Italia Tennis Rome ATP
From April 28 to May 17, 2026, the world’s tennis elite descends upon the Foro Italico for the 83rd edition of the Italian Open. This ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 event is widely considered the most glamorous stop on the clay-court circuit thanks also to the Italian tennis player generation most successful ever.
Surrounded by the iconic marble statues of the Stadio dei Marmi, you can watch stars like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz battle it out under the Roman sun. The atmosphere is electric, the food is gourmet, and the proximity to the players is unmatched.
The athletic Golden Gala Pietro Mennea
As spring turns to summer, the focus shifts back to the track. On June 4, 2026 the Golden Gala, part of the Diamond League, brings the fastest humans on earth to the Stadio Olimpico. Named after the legendary Italian sprinter Pietro Mennea, this event is a high-speed spectacle of world records and Olympic-level competition. Watching a 100m sprint or a high-jump finale as the sun sets over a Roman evening is an experience that stays with you forever.
Piazza di Siena – Show jumping in the heart of Rome
At the end of May, Rome turns elegant with Piazza di Siena, one of the world’s most prestigious equestrian competitions. Set inside the breathtaking Villa Borghese, this historic event brings Olympic-level riders and top horses to a unique oval arena surrounded by centuries-old trees.
It’s a rare mix of elite sport and timeless Roman charm — refined, vibrant, and unmistakably unforgettable.
Bonus: Football passion at the Stadio Olimpico
If you want to experience pure Italian passion, nothing compares to a match at the Stadio Olimpico. Whether it’s a home game of AS Roma or SS Lazio, the atmosphere is electric — chants, flags, and a city divided by love for its colors.
And if you’re lucky, you might catch the Coppa Italia Final, one of the most anticipated nights in Italian football. Ninety minutes here are not just a match — they’re a full immersion into Rome’s beating heart.
