Rome for free: the midday cannon at Gianicolo Hill
Since 1847, every day at midday a cannon blasts from Gianicolo Hill to mark the hour, a tradition initiated by Pope Pius IX to unify Rome’s church bells to ring at the same time.
Today, witnessing the midday cannon is still a beloved daily ritual and a fun experience, especially for tourists, families, and kids who come to admire this old but cherished tradition.
In addition, the panoramic view from the Gianicolo is one of the best in Rome, offering sweeping vistas over the rooftops and domes of the Eternal City.
A wonderful way to complete the discovery of Rome’s free attractions, since in the Eternal City beauty is in every corner and often it is not expensive at all.
