By embracing these budget travel tips for Rome, you’ll discover that the Eternal City is not just a destination for the affluent, but an accessible dream for every traveler.
When to go: beat the crowds and save your money
One of the biggest factors in budget travel is timing. Rome’s peak season – from late April to September – sees higher prices for everything from flights to accommodation.
To truly experience cheap travel to Rome, aim for the shoulder seasons – late March-early April (except for holy Easter week), October-November – or even the low season – from December to February, excluding Christmas/New Year. You’ll find significantly lower prices and fewer crowds, allowing for a more authentic and less rushed experience. January, in particular, is often the cheapest month for flights and hotels.

Smart stays: affordable accommodation in Rome
Forget the hotels right next to the Colosseum if you’re on a tight budget. Affordable accommodation in Rome can be found in charming, well-connected neighborhoods slightly outside the absolute city center.
Districts like the Termini area can be a good option if you are traveling to Rome on a budget. Termini is a busy transport hub – main rail station, subways, and buses – you’ll find a high concentration of hostels and budget-friendly hotels here. Search in the streets on the way to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore or the university La Sapienza if you want places with a safer feel.

How to Get Around Rome on a Budget
Even though the Eternal City has the greatest old city center, Rome is a remarkably walkable city, and your feet will be your best budget-friendly friend! Most major sights in the historic center are easily accessible on foot.
Embrace getting lost in the charming alleyways – you’ll stumble upon hidden gems and save on transport costs. When walking isn’t feasible, Rome’s public transport system (ATAC) is efficient and affordable with a single ticket (1.50 euros) or with 24-48-72-hour passes (from 7 euros to 18 euros) or a weekly pass for 24 euros. If you plan on visiting several museums and using public transport extensively, don’t forget to show your ATAC ticket at the entry since it guarantees a discount on many museum fees.
Budget-friendly food in Rome
Roman cuisine is a highlight, and you don’t need a fancy restaurant to experience it; you can eat like a local without breaking the bank. For lunch, you can taste a pizza al taglio or focaccia-like pizza, which is sold by weight, or eat tramezzini, hearty sandwiches available at bars and delis; both are a perfect, cheap, and quick meal. Street food like supplì, fried baccalà, and trapizzini is affordable and absolutely worth trying.

You can sample various local dishes at incredibly affordable prices.

Rome is an open-air museum, and many of its most iconic attractions are completely free to enjoy.
